Mitzi Mathenia,
Associate Director of Music Ministries
Mitzi and her husband Randy met
in college – accompanying and
directing the University Singers
at Memphis State University –
and they have been accompanying
and directing ever since!
Since coming to Northside in
1989, Mitzi has not only had the
privilege of playing the
organ/piano/keyboard to help
lead in worship, she has also
had the opportunity to use her
music to do all the things she
told God she would never do
(work with teenagers, play in a
large church, arrange music,
direct handbells) – which, of
course, have turned out to be
the very things she loves the
most about her work here!
She is also on staff at Lambuth
University as the accompanist
for their University Choir. She
and Randy have four sons ranging
in age from 21 to 13. Her
greatest joys are homeschooling
her boys and seeing the
countless ways God lets her
participate in people’s lives
with her piano playing. Her
greatest passion is to worship
God Almighty. And her greatest
desire is to live in such a way
that – as Bach signed his music,
“Soli Deo Gloria” – people would
be able to say, to God alone be
the glory. (She’s got a ways to
go on that one, but she’s
working on it!)
“When you sign up to follow God
wherever He wants you to go, you
think “spiders and snakes in
Africa” – and instead He has
allowed us to serve in this
amazing church, where we get to
watch people’s lives being
touched and changed, we get to
be a part of a place where the
Spirit is moving constantly, and
we get to serve Him by doing the
very things we love the most –
isn’t God incredible?!”
